I Had a Farm In Africa
There’s something important about me that you need to know before we can proceed with this blog entry…
I don’t like ice cream cake but I love cake ice cream.
That being said, it’s my oldest son’s 24th birthday today and his gift to me was being sane and sober. Isn’t that wonderful?
I offered up Cupcake cupcakes for him but he declined, “That’s too far to go, mom.”
Was that a non-egocentric answer there?
There is a God!
In other news, after seven days of visiting the gym for free, he asked to get a membership there. My son, who this time last year was unable to do just about anything has transferred his addiction to going to the gym.
He’s gone every day this week.
Cross-addiction. It’s a beautiful thing.
I’m not stupid. He’s still riding the roller coaster but right now it’s a kiddy coaster and all is well.
He’s even hanging out with friends. Non-using friends. And let me tell you, to come home and have him out at the gym or with safe friends, at a meeting or out for coffee, is the nicest thing to come home to these days.
About the gym…I was walking to the women’s locker room when I noticed a poster on the wall. It’s a guy in a doctor’s coat spinning a basketball on his fingertip. The poster is a little bio about him and how he thinks is so important to work out, find something you love and do it.
That doctor is my internal medicine doctor.
How’s that for motivation?
Oh! I was going to end this but how can I end this when I forgot to tell you what I did this week!
Last Friday, Nugget’s sister was staying at our house and some of her old high school girlfriends came over to see her. One of them is a surgical nurse in a different hospital than the one I work for. But we know a lot of the same people. And, she’s gone on the surgical missions to Africa!
Guess who went into work this week and signed up for the Africa (Liberia) mission? That would be me. Actually, one of our sedation nurses kind of heads up something for the missions (I don’t know what exactly, but her name is on the website) and she’d been positive about my signing up for one of their trips. The Liberia trip for this November is full but I filled out a form for the trip there in 2014. Then I told her that I’d be happy to fill in for this November if anyone had to cancel.
I need to get my expired passport renewed right away!
I’m not sure I’ll be accepted but I hope I will be.
Then I can worry about how unsafe it is to travel in Liberia.
Then if I get accepted and safely arrive at the mission grounds, I can worry about getting cellulitis in Africa.
Don’t you love how I think?
